Storm Sewers
A storm sewer is designed to drain excess rain and ground water from paved streets, parking lots and sidewalks. Most storm sewers are provided with gratings or grids to prevent large objects from falling into the sewer system. Many of the small objects that make it through the grate are caught by the catch basin, or sump, which lies immediately below the grating. Water from the top of the catch basin drains into the sewer pipes connected to the basin, which serves much like a trap in household wastewater plumbing.
The performance of catch basins at removing sediment and other pollutants depends on the design of the catch basin (e.g., the size of the sump), and routine maintenance to retain the storage available in the sump to capture sediment. Atlas Paving has the expertise to install the best basin for your needs in the proper manner to insure ideal water drainage.
Drainage
Pipes can come in many different shapes (rectangular, square, bread loaf shaped, oval and, more commonly, circle) and have many different features. Several different materials can also be used, such as plastic and concrete. Atlas Paving can recommend and install the correct size of piping and the percentage of fall needed to move water efficiently off your pavement surface.
Building Codes
Building codes can vary on the handling of storm drain runoff. New developments might be required to construct their own storm drain processing capacity for returning the runoff to the water table and bioswales may be required in sensitive ecological areas to protect the watershed.
