Pavement Cracking Problem:
As any asphalt surface ages, it can become cracked and worn. A cracked asphalt surface can lead to bigger problems in the future if not taken care of quickly and properly.

At Atlas Paving we can do crack filling. Asphalt crack filling is done by pouring hot, rubberized sealant into an isolated asphalt crack to prevent water from penetrating the subgrade and stone base. It is a cost effective pavement maintenance action.

Pavement Cracking Solution:
If left unchecked, a crack will allow water under the pavement which can cause the base to destabilize during a thaw cycle. An unstable base will lead to more cracks, and alligatoring of asphalt, which will eventually lead to total pavement failure. If your pavement has become alligatored, that means water has penetrated the subgrade and the asphalt pavement cannot support the traffic any longer. In this case, crack filling will not be sufficient.

Potholes Problems:
If you have two cracks that intersect, you will eventually have a pothole. Potholes are severe manifestations of pavement fatigue cracking resulting in a total loss of asphalt surfacing in a localized area.

This creates a hole in the road or asphalt surface. It is not uncommon to have a pothole extend through or into the aggregate base. Extensive potholing is an indication of severe structural problems. If allowed to remain uncorrected, they present a safety hazard to the public.

Potholes Solution:
In the spring and summer months, potholes in Toledo and the surrounding area should be permanently patched. The outside perimeter of the pothole should be saw-cut and the damaged materials and any temporary patching material removed to a depth of at least 4 inches. The edges of the saw-cut pavement should receive an application of tack coat, and the hole should be filled with compacted hot mix asphalt. Atlas Paving in Toledo has the know-how to fix any pothole.

Drainage Issues / Problems:
Proper pavement drainage is important to ensure a high-quality, long-lasting pavement; moisture accumulation in any pavement structural layer can cause problems. Moisture in the subgrade and aggregate base layer can weaken these materials by increasing pore pressure and reducing the materials' resistance to shear. Additionally, some soils expand when moist, causing differential heaving. Moisture in the asphalt layers can cause stripping because it, instead of the asphalt binder, will adhere to aggregate particles.
Drainage Issues Solution:
Surface drainage is concerned with removing all water that is present on the pavement surface, shoulder surface or any other surface from which it may flow onto the pavement. If not removed, this water can accumulate underneath and weaken the
pavement structure.
Subsurface drainage is concerned with removing water that percolates through or is contained in the underlying subgrade. This water, typically the result of a high water table or exceptionally wet weather, can accumulate under the pavement structure.
